I wrote a blog post on this http://t.co/5uioU7a

Personally I fail to see how excluding the "lesser" nations from the tournament adds anything to the prestige of the tournament itself, or how it improves the cricketing standards of those lesser nations.

Surely if the 2011 edition of the tournament was unwieldy then the best thing to do would be to change the format of tournament rather than what basically amounts to punishing the lesser nations.

BOOO to the ICC, you need to take a good hard look at yourselves and give yourselves an uppercut. I think it's time to point our shaming fingers...
SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON YOU. SHAME ON YOU.

They have just hugely overreacted since a lot of people said the tournament was too long. 'Okay we'll take out some teams', however they've gone about it the wrong way. A better system would've been just to say the top 8 of the previous tournament qualify automatically, the other 2 places taken by 2 teams who reach the final of a seperate tournament or who top a qualifying league.
I think having the system mentioned in your blog does solve the tournament being too long issue, but it would lead to too many one-sided contests. I do prefer having too many teams rather than too few however, it is the World Cup after all.

Aren't they constrained from reducing the length of the tournament anyway by their TV contracts? So even reducing the number of teams doesn't reduce the matches.

I think the format change you propose rollo is the right way to go, though it might be 3 groups of 4 with a wildcard system or something like that. A qualifying league or minnows tournament is also a must to make sure you get the best of the other teams. Failing all of that I still really like Dan's idea of the rest of the world team (maybe have a 12 team world cup with the winner of a minnows cup and the best of the rest from that tournament)
