Our favourite cricketers. Episode 1: Ralphy

by sophiajuliet 3. August 2010 20:07

Today an accusation of negativity was levelled at the Sofa, and it occurred to me that in our unfettered criticism of what we don't like about the game and its players, we sometimes forget to mention what and whom we love in it.

So this is the first in a series of bloglets in which Sofa stalwarts tell us a little bit about their favourite international cricketer. The only rules I have laid down are that a) the person in question must currently be playing (or eligible to play) international cricket, and b) they can't blether on about them - the argument should be fewer than 100 words long.

First up is the Sofa's monkey in chief Ralphy, who has chosen Daniel Vettori, and here's why, in his words:

He's the most talented cricketer in the southern hemisphere bar none and wrings every inch out of his talent. Vettori gives hope to geeky looking chaps everywhere. He was New Zealand spectacle wearer of the year 2008. What's not to like? Jesse rider take note!

Wow!! Didn't mean to inspire more work for you guys. It just struck me that your alternative, and arguably more correct, view of all things cricket, jars somewhat with what us less learn'ed observers are told by the usual suspects. So, yeah, glad to hear there will be more "folks we actually like" moments. Not cos you're unduly negative. But rather cos you know stuff I don't.

Whilst it is true we know stuff you don't Ralphy obviously doesn't know how to spell Ryder.

I am outraged that Ralphy thinks Vettoria can usurp King Kumar as the most talented cricketer in the Southern hemisphere. I could ask Howzat to back me up with stats but when The Reverse Sweep has already been on the case, why trouble Howzat? (http://twitter.com/TheReverseSweep/status/20206143179).
